In school we were told to write in a specific format to be successful. If we did not follow that path given, our work would not have a thought out concept and be clear or concise. Is that true?
It may be true for some people, but I felt that I was different. My instructors wanted to see a topic, a thesis, and an outline all before the full details are even completed. I always worked backwards. I wrote my paper then gave them the pieces they wanted as if I was writing the conventional way.
Well not only I can say that I usually start my writing process for school papers outside of the conventional methods, but I do the same for my books. I begin with a character and allow the character traits and details to unfold as I write. I allow my fingers to do the writing.
I find that writing with an open mind allows me to flow better and create something special. I think throughout my life, imagining and re-imagining moments in my life and creating stories. Once I sit down, I let it all out without the extra focus on a layout, theme, or even topic. My characters are a resemblance of what I see around me. I tend to watch others and use pieces of their characteristics to create the perfect character.
Once I sit down to write, I write a few chapters. After maybe three to four chapters, I pick out details which I find to be pertinent to the story and important enough to ensure that I do not change the path of a character or the smallest detail or the plot.
Would it make sense for me to write the other, more conventional way? Maybe, but I feel that restricting myself to write in a specific format will stump the joys I have for writing and make it into a chore.
